This session will familiarize the participants with concepts including
transmission of HIV, worldwide epidemic data in a lecture given by the
Australian doctor. A local Indian doctor will be invited in advance to
prepare a brief presentation (15 minutes) on the current situation in
India and if possible in the region of India where this presentation is
being made. |

The HIV pandemic continues to evolve, in both magnitude and diversity
whereas traditional epidemics have been limited to high risk
populations, in many regions, it has generalized to the at large
population. |

In the early stages of infection, HIV often causes no symptoms and the
infection can be diagnosed only by testing a person's blood. Tests are
available. |

This session will introduce the above
topics and set the scene for an interactive case presentation and
discussion which will put the information into clinical context. The
importance of combination therapy will be emphasized. Indian (generic)
drugs will be included in the presentation. |

These discussion groups will be
conducted one after the other (if the participant number is small eg 20
or less) or jointly with the Indian doctor and the Australian doctor
each taking a group (if the numbers are large). There will be case
presentations or short lectures to stimulate discussion if required.

Infected mothers can pass HIV to their
newborns. Children immune systems are still developing. They have a
different response to HIV infection. |

This session will common opportunistic infections including
pneumocystis pneumonia, candida oesophagitis, toxoplasma encephalitis
and TB. A local participant presents a brief case presentation (5 to 10
minutes) of a patient who has presented difficulties in either
diagnosis or management. |
