The alarming fact that the HIV/ AIDS pandemic have been affecting people in their productive age group has prompted many progressive and sensitive corporate to take measures to protect their employees from this health challenge
Tata Consultancy Services through Maitree - the Corporate Sustainability and Employee volunteering arm of TCS - has initiated an HIV/ AIDS Workplace Intervention Programme in association with Modicare Foundation. The programme was initiated in the year 2005-06.
One of the most important components of this programme is Peer Education.
Peers or colleagues play a key role in the lives of an individual and influence lifestyles and the decision-making process to a large extent. Dissemination of HIV/ AIDS messages through Peer Educators (PEs) has proved to be a very effective method to build awareness. A trained group of PEs plays a crucial role in the sustainability of the programme.
TCS have over 90 certified Peer Educators (PEs) who have undergone rigorous training at a full day workshop conducted by the Modicare Foundation. The PEs have conducted basic awareness programs on HIV/AIDS not only for their fellow colleagues but also for the marginalized section of society and the student community. Over 2500 TCS employees have attended the HIV/AIDS awareness program so far.
To ensure that the campaign does not end here, TCS continues to build momentum for this movement to tackle the HIV/AIDS problem and avoid further deterioration by spreading awareness and taking necessary corrective measures. Several activities were planned this World AIDS Day globally across all offices in a weeklong campaign from 26th November to 3rd December'07, to reiterate our commitment to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, enhance awareness and remove all misconceptions surrounding it.
TCS motto remains: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
