Social Marketing amongst the Unorganised Labour at the Construction Sites at Sohna Road, Badshahpur, Gurgaon

Nearly 86 percent HIV transmission happens through unsafe sex in the country (source: NACO). The government bodies, civil society organisations as well as bilateral and multilateral organisations are advocating and promoting condom use as safe sex practice for prevention of STI/RTI and HIV, in addition to protection from unwanted pregnancy.

Social Marketing has an edge over the conventional product delivery mechanisms as there is a personal interaction and it enables to gauge the knowledge levels of individual and communities.

Going in sync with the NACP III objective- stressing integration of social marketing approaches to all targeted interventions, CII-SREI-Modicare Project has been consistently promoting use of condom amongst the migrant labourers. (at the construction sites-Vatika Labour camp and Park view labour camp)

This is being done through social marketing and condom demonstration through outreach activities covering issues such as.
  • Stigma related to condoms
  • Correct & consistent use of condom
  • Condom as duel protection
  • Introduction to variety of condoms
  • Enquiring about the location of condoms availability
  • Myths related to condom
32 condom outlets have been set up in the area for easy accessibility for the population. The outlets are also the focal points on giving information on HIV and Sexually Transmissible Infections.

In an attempt to raise the awareness level, inculcate the habit and understanding about the condoms, a condom party with males as well as females was organised. The female condom party included talk on reproductive and sexual health, myths and misconceptions about condoms and HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections.
