Chandigarh: Advocacy cum Training Programme to mainstream HIV/AIDS in the Industrial Sector

"Engaging HR professionals critical to mainstreaming HIV/AIDS in Industrial Sector", was the advocacy cum training programme organized to further step up efforts to encourage industry participation. The Programme was organized by CII Chandigarh State Council in collaboration with State AIDS Control Society UT Chandigarh.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vanita Gupta, Project Director, State AIDS Control Society UT Chandigarh, said, "AIDS is not about some people doing some things. It is about each one of us, the entire community, including the government, corporate sector, NGOs and society at large, to rise to the challenge and deal with the issue at the pace of combat as there is a dire need to do concerted efforts on the issue.”

Tracing the involvement of the CII in dealing with AIDS, Mr Manmohan Singh, Convenor, CII Chandigarh State Council CSR Panel said "CII took on the role of providing HIV/AIDS advisory services to its member companies as early as 1996, with the start of an "AIDS in the Workplace Programmme". Creating awareness about AIDS, training of trainers within the companies, developing and standardizing workplace protocol on AIDS, helping companies develop AIDS policies, facilitating programmes ,sharing best practices, are some of the services provided by CII as part of its AIDS advisory services."

Mr Singh called upon the participants to access the CII-NDPL 24-7 Toll Free HIV /AIDS helpline 1800-180-2008 available in four languages Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu. Mr Singh said that the highest incidence of the HIV is observed in the most productive age of 15-49 that constitutes the major proportion of the Industrial workforce; hence a clearly defined strategy on HIV/AIDS awareness generation is the need of the day. CII Northern Region stands committed to complement the efforts of Government and other agencies working towards eradication of the disease.

Andhra Pradesh: Mass Sensitization of Workforce

In a fight against HIV/AIDS CII Andhra Pradesh has joined hands with Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society to sensitize the workforce of the industry in the state. Andhra Pradesh is considered one of India’s high prevalence HIV/AIDS states and CII and APSACS have responded to the disease with a wide range of programs consisting of HIV/AIDS Policy signing, top management sensitization followed by mass orientation. The overall goal and objective of the CII-APSACS HIV/AIDS Industry Intervention project is to involve the businesses in mobilizing the support and give enhanced visibility to the campaign to rule out HIV/AIDS from our country. This project also focuses on improving the industry engagement in this fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic which has been affecting productive people in their prime age group which in turn has a negative impact on the productivity of the industry.

Underlining the economic cost of the epidemic over the productivity and in the long run over the GDP, this 30 months project was initiated in April 2006. This intervention has made a great impact and we have envisaged our members, continue their commitment towards this social cause. Under this project, more than 140 companies have signed HIV/AIDS policy and top management & mass sensitization sessions were organized at more than 100 companies covering more than 25,000 workforce. CII has trained 20 lead facilitators across the state who can handle the sessions efficiently in multiple languages.

The products manufactured at this location ranges from UV (Maxx) to 3 Wheelers (Champion Alfa), LCVs and Buses. The manufacturing facilities present at the plant include Body Shop, AED Line, Paint Shop and Assembly Lines. Mahindra has a strong CSR team which proactively responds to the social causes and involves all employees actively under 'ESOPS' (Employee Social Options) project.

CII-APSACS mass sensitization session was organized at Mahindra on 08 August 2008 for which not only employees and truckers but also school children of upper classes were invited. Separate sessions were organized for School Children, Truckers and the employees depending upon their knowledge and mobility level.

Community Involvement

The company recognizes the importance of local community involvement in building a good social and economic system around the plant location. Recognizing the need to teach the Children from age 13 about HIV/AIDS local M&M School and Sangamithra School children were invited for the program aimed at building awareness. The interesting note was enthusiastic participation from truck drivers which is one of the worst affected community. Even though the journey towards eradication is long the first step has begun which would lead the path.
